How to Measure Your Dog for the Perfect Anatomical Harness Fit

How to Measure Your Dog for the Perfect Anatomical Harness Fit

Why Proper Measurement Matters More Than You Think

When it comes to choosing the right harness for your four-legged companion, size truly matters. A well-fitted anatomical harness isn't just about comfort—it's about your dog's health, safety, and natural movement patterns.

At DOGMA, we believe every dog deserves gear that enhances their joy while keeping them safe. That's why we've created this comprehensive guide to help you measure your dog correctly for our anatomical H-harnesses.

The Golden Rule: Don't Rely on Weight!

Here's a crucial insight many dog owners miss: two dogs of the same weight can have completely different body measurements and proportions.

Think about it—a stocky French Bulldog and a lean Whippet might both weigh 15kg, but their chest measurements, neck circumference, and body structure are vastly different. This is why accurate measurements are the only reliable way to ensure a perfect fit.

Step-by-Step Measuring Guide

What You'll Need:

  • Soft measuring tape (most accurate)
  • Ruler and string (alternative method)
  • A calm, relaxed dog
  • Treats for positive reinforcement

The Two Essential Measurements:

1. Chest Girth (Most Important)

  • Where to measure: Around the widest part of your dog's chest, typically just behind the front legs
  • How to do it: Place the measuring tape snugly (but not tightly) around the chest
  • Pro tip: You should be able to fit one finger comfortably under the tape

2. Neck Girth

  • Upper point: At the beginning of the shoulder blades
  • Lower point: At the protruding breastbone
  • Technique: Wrap the tape measure as shown in our diagram, ensuring it sits comfortably around the neck area

DOGMA's Sizing Philosophy

Our anatomical H-harnesses are designed with 6 adjustment points to accommodate the unique proportions of every dog.

Why Anatomical Design Matters:

  • No restriction of natural shoulder movement
  • Even pressure distribution across the chest (never on the neck)
  • Comfortable for extended wear during long walks and adventures
  • Supports proper posture and healthy movement patterns

Measuring Tips for Success

For the Best Results:

  1. Measure when your dog is calm and standing naturally
  2. Take measurements over a thin shirt or directly on fur (not over thick coats)
  3. Measure twice to confirm accuracy
  4. If between sizes, size up for growing puppies or fluffy breeds
  5. Consider seasonal coat changes for double-coated breeds
